Georgia Southern University’s College of Science and Mathematics (COSM) Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) program is a federally funded program that aims to increase the number of academically talented, Pell grant-eligible students with unmet financial needs who graduate with a STEM degree and progress into the STEM workforce.
What does the COSM S-STEM program provide to students?
The program recognizes that financial aid alone cannot increase the retention and graduation of academically-talented, Pell grant-eligible students. With this in mind, S-STEM provides four years of scholarships and evidence-based curricular and co-curricular activities such as mentoring, research opportunities, and internship funds to support student success and preparation for STEM career pathways.
Scholarship amounts will vary by student. Each scholarship is determined by the total unmet financial need a student has after receiving federal aid, calculated by the Office of Financial Aid. Unmet financial needs may include tuition, fees, books, and housing.
Am I eligible?
Students are eligible to apply if they:
-
Are a U.S. citizen, U.S. national (as defined in section 101(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act), alien admitted as a refugee under section 207 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, or alien lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence.
-
Have demonstrated unmet financial need as defined by the US Department of Education rules for need-based Federal financial aid, Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
-
Are an incoming 1st year student with a high school GPA of 2.75 or higher.
-
Are planning to enroll as a full-time or part-time student majoring in a COSM undergraduate degree, including Biochemistry (B.S.), Biology (B.A. or B.S.), Biomedical Science (B.S.), Chemistry (B.S.), Geosciences (B.S.), Mathematics (B.S.), Physics (B.S.), or Sustainability Science (B.S.). Degrees offered in the College of Health Professions, College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, or the College of Public Health are not eligible.
If accepted into this program, S-STEM student scholars must meet the Pell grant eligibility and GPA requirements each year for four years to remain in the program and receive scholarships.
The COSM S-STEM Program is highly competitive; meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission. The admissions committee assesses all application materials to identify students with academic talent who aim to pursue a degree and career in STEM. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
